
Dr. Terrell Young will review literature that can be used as a powerful tool in literacy instruction and in developing the awareness and understandings necessary in today's multicultural classrooms. Participants will leave with practical ideas for celebrating diverse voices in their classrooms.
Dr. Young is a Professor of Literacy Education at Washington State University and a member of the International Reading Association (IRA) Board of Directors. He has taught students from grade two through graduate school and is recognized as an outstanding professor, writer, and professional development speaker for schools, districts, and reading councils. Dr. Young has been president of the Washington Organization for Reading Development (WORD), the National Council of English Teachers (NCTE) Children's Literature Assembly, and the IRA Children's Literature and Reading Special Interest Group. He serves on the editorial review board for The Reading Teacher, Reading Horizons, and The Journal of Children's Literature. Dr. Young has published extensively on the topic of literature and literacy development in culturally and linguistically diverse students. His most recent publications include is Creating Lifelong Readers Through Independent Reading (IRA, 2010) and Matching Books and Readers: Helping English Learners in Grades K-6 (Guildford Press, 2010).
Audience: Elementary and middle school teachers, curriculum specialists, ESL and support teachers, resource teachers, teacher-librarians, counsellors, administrators, literacy mentors, pre-service teachers, and university instructors.
